McLaren has announced significant investment plans to expand its automotive operations in the United Kingdom. Initially, the company planned a £450 million investment in its Woking technology centre to bolster manufacturing and research following a restructuring and acquisition by Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings. This phase aimed to create 1,000 jobs and broaden the company’s product range beyond supercars. Following these developments, the investment scale increased to over £500 million. Supported by Abu Dhabi-based sovereign investor L’IMAD, this expanded plan includes the development of new powertrain technologies and the launch of a performance SUV. The new vehicle, internally referred to as the ‘P47’, is a four-door, five-seat hybrid model with all-wheel drive built on a carbon-fiber chassis. While earlier projections suggested a 2028 launch, recent updates indicate the SUV is expected to debut globally by 2029 or 2030, positioning it to compete with luxury models such as the Ferrari Purosangue and Aston Martin DBX. The initiative marks the first time the company will design and manufacture engines and transmissions in-house, moving away from total reliance on external suppliers. This includes the development of two new hybrid engines. The expansion will impact several UK sites, including the production centre in Woking, the composites technology centre in South Yorkshire, and new facilities in Bicester and the Midlands. The company expects to create at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2032, with the potential to double its manufacturing workforce. CEO Nick Collins stated the investment provides a platform to grow and remain competitive while delivering products in a “McLaren way.” UK government officials have described the move as the “biggest investment in our car industry in the post-war era.” As part of a major strategic overhaul, McLaren intends to phase out its entire current vehicle lineup by 2028.
