In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the political landscape is shifting following state elections where the AfD emerged as the strongest force with 38.2% of the vote. To form a government, the SPD (35.5%) has unanimously decided to enter exploratory talks with Die Linke and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. A coalition between these three parties would control 39 of the 71 seats, providing an absolute majority. New parliamentary leadership has been established: Enrico Schult leads the AfD, Julian Barlen leads the SPD, Hennis Herbst leads Die Linke, and Claudia Müller serves as interim leader for the Greens. As negotiations proceed, Green Youth chair Henriette Held has demanded specific inclusions in any agreement, such as climate neutrality by 2035, free public transport for those under 27, and a 1,500 euro bonus for apprentices staying in the state. Following the election results, Patrick Dahlemann, head of the State Chancellery and an SPD member, announced his intention to resign. Dahlemann stated his term will end with the convening of the new parliament and that he will relinquish his parliamentary mandate once a new Minister President is elected. He described his loss of the Vorpommern-Greifswald IV constituency to the AfD as a “hard personal setback.” Additionally, the CDU failed to meet the five-percent threshold, receiving 4.9% of the vote. CDU leader Friedrich Merz addressed the setback, stating the need to continue planned reforms rather than making personnel changes. In response to the political climate, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and her entire cabinet have decided to waive a planned 2.8 percent salary increase for civil servants.
