Medical accident at Bulovka University Hospital

Overview

On August 25, 2026, a 24-year-old woman sustained second- and third-degree burns over approximately 15 percent of her body during an emergency C-section at Bulovka University Hospital in Prague. The injuries, affecting her abdomen, hips, inner thighs, and genital area, reportedly occurred when a spark from a surgical instrument ignited chemical disinfectant applied to the patient while doctors were attempting to control bleeding.

The patient was temporarily treated at the Burns Medicine Clinic at University Hospital Královské Vinohrady but has since returned to Bulovka Hospital’s postpartum ward in stable condition. Her newborn was unharmed.

Prague police have launched an investigation to determine if criminal wrongdoing occurred. Simultaneously, the hospital has established an internal commission to review technical equipment, surgical protocols, and medical documentation to evaluate patient safety and care quality.
