Medical emergency ingestions in Vietnam
Overview
Medical reports from Vietnam detail two separate instances of emergency interventions following the ingestion of harmful or foreign objects.
At Viet Duc University Hospital, surgeons completed a complex, two-stage reconstruction to restore a patient’s digestive tract after the accidental ingestion of toilet cleaner. The chemical caused severe burns, necessitating the removal of the stomach and the creation of a new food passage using a segment of the colon to connect the pyriform sinus to the small intestine. After intensive rehabilitation, the patient has regained the ability to drink water.
In a separate incident at Tam Nong Regional Medical Center, doctors used endoscopy to remove a 20cm toothbrush from a patient’s stomach. The object had been swallowed accidentally and was lodged within food residue. The procedure, performed under general anesthesia, successfully extracted the toothbrush intact without causing internal bleeding or perforations.
