Overview

Medical research has identified various links between hormone treatments and cardiovascular health. A Danish study involving nearly 100,000 women indicated that oral hormone therapy for menopause is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots, whereas skin patches did not show similar risks.

Further research has highlighted a lack of data regarding cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks among transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming populations. While testosterone-based hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is noted for potentially increasing risks such as high blood pressure, researchers suggest that all transgender individuals may face elevated CVD risks compared to cisgender individuals, regardless of hormone use.
