Mediterranean heat and warming impact health and aviation
Overview
The Mediterranean region continues to face extreme climatic conditions, including intense heat and rising ocean temperatures. In Southern Europe and the Balkans, authorities have maintained water restrictions for private pools to protect drinking supplies during droughts. Health experts have expanded warnings regarding physiological risks, noting that extreme heat can lead to dehydration, increased heart rates, and higher risks of blood clots.
As the season transitions, weather patterns in the Balkan region are shifting from intense heat toward unstable conditions, with warnings issued for potential thunderstorms, hail, and supercells in parts of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
New research published in ‘Atmospheric Science Letters’ by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) links Mediterranean warming to increased threats to European aviation safety. The study indicates that rising sea temperatures foster severe convective activity and intense thunderstorms. Lead researcher Tommaso Alberti warns that continued warming could result in more intense storms across summer, autumn, and winter, impacting airport infrastructure and flight operations through increased wind shear, sudden gusts, and reduced visibility. This follows documented increases in Mediterranean surface temperatures of approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius.
