Mediterranean maritime policy cooperation

During a trilateral meeting in Limassol, maritime ministers from Cyprus, Greece, and Malta, alongside Italy, signed a declaration to bolster the competitiveness of the European shipping sector. Greek Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias noted that because 90% of global trade is conducted by sea, maritime decisions directly impact the costs of food, energy, and consumer products for European families.

The agreement seeks to promote economically efficient measures through negotiations within the European Union and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The group aims to present a unified voice to ensure Europe remains a leader in shipbuilding, ports, and energy through prudent, long-term planning.

As discussions continue at the IMO regarding the Net-Zero Framework, the four Mediterranean nations are specifically advocating for a global framework that balances environmental ambition with technological feasibility and market realities. This coordinated effort addresses the need for realistic decarbonization measures that account for economic impacts and the challenges posed by regional instability.
