The crackdown that began with the 16 July 2026 operation in Catania has continued to expand across Italy’s agro-food sector. In Catania, more than 400 kg of untraceable animal products, fruit and vegetables were seized, fines exceeding €20,000 were imposed and an illegal distribution business was shut down, with much of the confiscated food donated to charity. On 2 July, a joint operation in Trapani seized about 600 kg of fish and shellfish lacking traceability documentation and resulted in fines totalling roughly €24,000. The same night, inspections in Catania’s Ognina district uncovered additional non-traceable seafood, illegal labour and hygiene breaches. Further raids on 22 July in Giulianova intercepted 180 kg of clams and in Taranto confiscated 12,500 packages of pet food for false labelling, leading to fines of about €130,000 and criminal charges. A nationwide pet-food inspection campaign (23 March–30 June) found irregularities in 21% of 275 facilities, prompting 56 administrative reports, four fraud convictions, seizures of over 60,800 kg of pet food, the closure of two production sites and fines of €129,773. On 7 August, Carabinieri NAS inspections in Palermo targeted distribution depots, supermarkets, and a meat-processing plant. Authorities uncovered serious hygienic deficiencies, lack of HACCP procedures, and improper storage temperatures, including food kept in rusted containers at gelaterias. Approximately 500 kg of expired or unfit food was seized for destruction, €23,000 in sanctions were imposed, and the meat-processing company was suspended. On 20 August, inspections in San Gregorio di Catania and Valverde resulted in €17,000 in administrative sanctions and one criminal report. In Valverde, a restaurant owner faced a €15,000 fine and judicial reporting due to structural deficiencies and the absence of mandatory risk assessment documentation. ~~Overall, coordinated multi-agency actions demonstrate an escalating enforcement effort targeting seafood, pet food and broader food-safety violations throughout Italy.~~ On 24 August, authorities conducted further inspections across the country.
