Meghalaya political realignment
Overview
The political landscape in Meghalaya has undergone significant shifts involving the United Democratic Party (UDP). Initially, eight UDP MLAs defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), increasing the BJP’s presence in the 60-member Assembly from two to ten members. This movement drew criticism from UDP leadership and the State Congress, with the latter describing the shift as an “inorganic” merger.
Following this, the UDP faced further depletion as three additional MLAs were expected to join the ruling National People's Party (NPP), potentially leaving the UDP with only one legislator in the Assembly. On October 23, 2026, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma formally recognized the merger of three UDP MLAs—Paul Lyngdoh, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and Nujorki Sungoh—with the NPP.
These moves were executed as mergers under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, as the departing members met the two-thirds requirement necessary to merge their legislative party with another. UDP President and Cabinet Minister Metbah Lyngdoh expressed surprise at the departures, noting the legislators were elected on UDP tickets in 2023. Despite the loss of most of its MLAs, Lyngdoh maintained that the UDP remains a functioning political entity and is preparing for the 2028 Assembly polls.
