The Election Commission of India initiated a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the North Garo Hills district of Meghalaya to verify voter identities. Initially, 34,730 voters were flagged for discrepancies or absence from 2005 rolls, with verification processes beginning in mid-August across 190 polling stations. Following unrest and a Khasi Students’ Union rally in Shillong, Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari extended the deadline for filing claims and objections from September 4 to September 18. By the time of the extension, officials had conducted 129,298 SIR hearings, identifying 297 ineligible electors. The CEO stated that no names would be removed from the draft roll without due process, including individual inquiry and a reasoned speaking order. The final electoral roll is now scheduled for publication on October 21. As the 2026 SIR progresses, Chief Electoral Officer Dr. BDR Tiwari reported that 384 electors have been declared ineligible following scrutiny and hearings. Out of 2,169,243 electors in the Draft Electoral Roll, 651,735 individuals have been identified for scrutiny due to mapping discrepancies or being in the ‘No Mapping’ category. To date, 620,730 notices have been delivered and 208,870 hearings have been conducted. Dr. Tiwari reiterated that receiving a notice does not result in automatic deletion, but rather provides an opportunity for electors to clarify discrepancies through supporting documentation.
