Meghalaya VPP protest movement

In late July 2026 the Voice of the People Party (VPP) in Meghalaya broadened its activist agenda. On July 21 the party lodged a representation urging the state transport authority to lower financial thresholds for a proposed vehicle‑scrapping and testing facility, arguing that the current limits would exclude indigenous entrepreneurs and calling for preferential treatment of locally owned cooperatives. At the same time VPP leaders expressed solidarity with nationwide student protests over an alleged NEET exam leak, condemning police force and demanding protection of public institutions.

Ten days later, on July 31, VPP shifted focus to environmental and governance issues, accusing the state government of bias in a public hearing on Shree Cement Ltd’s planned limestone mining at Lum Shyrman. The party claimed the hearing was rigged in favor of the mining firm and announced a peaceful march to the state Secretariat on August 6 to press the government on the mining project, the Lumpongdeng Island proposal, and alleged recruitment irregularities. The progression shows VPP moving from advocating local business preferences and supporting student protests to directly confronting large‑scale industrial projects and organizing larger public demonstrations.
