In mid‑2026 Melbourne Airport reported a record 12.3 million international passengers, driving the push for a A$4.5 billion expansion of its international terminal, a third runway and upgraded ground‑access facilities. The surge highlighted growing demand from key markets such as China, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Later that month, Qantas Group secured a long‑term commercial agreement with the airport. The deal backs the terminal expansion, adds five new wide‑body gates, and commits to constructing the third runway slated for 2031. It also includes a larger International Business Lounge opening in 2029 and plans for Qantas to base Airbus A350‑1000LR aircraft at Melbourne, enabling new long‑range services.
