Melbourne transport infrastructure developments

Overview

The Victorian government has implemented significant changes to Melbourne’s transport infrastructure strategy, primarily focused on the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) and regional rail upgrades.

To manage public funds, Premier Ben Carroll announced a $2 billion cost reduction for the 90-kilometer underground SRL project. This reduction follows scrutiny regarding the project’s financial viability and long-term economic impact.

In addition to SRL adjustments, the government has committed $80 million to duplicate the Upfield rail line between Gowrie and Upfield stations to increase capacity. To save approximately $686 million, eight level crossing removals on this line will be delayed to align with the track duplication.

Furthermore, the Australian and Victorian governments have moved to accelerate the Melbourne Airport rail link. Stage two of this project will involve a 7.4km line from Albion to the airport precinct via a new Keilor East station, including a rail bridge over the Maribyrnong River. Procurement is expected to begin shortly, with construction planned for 2028 and completion targeted for 2031.
