Mendoza provincial governance and national relations

Mendoza Governor Alfredo Cornejo has been managing provincial political succession and national-level alliances. In mid-August, Cornejo addressed the ambitions of his ministers regarding the 2027 elections, stating that governance and results must take precedence over political candidacy. He also planned a trip to Buenos Aires to discuss legislative agendas and funding, amid efforts by the La Libertad Avanza party to build coalitions with the PRO and the Radical Civic Union.

By September, the focus shifted toward the fiscal and infrastructural challenges facing provincial leaders. During a discussion on democracy and development, Cornejo and other governors addressed the increasing burden on provinces to fund and maintain national infrastructure. Cornejo noted that Mendoza is using provincial funds to manage federal corridors due to the difficulty of securing national resources, remarking, “It is very hard to take a peso from the Nation.”

Cornejo also defended the support provided by allied governors to President Javier Milei’s economic reforms, arguing that this cooperation provides stability for international investors, even as he suggested the national government currently has “more taking than giving” in its relationship with the provinces.
