Following the provisional implementation of the Mercosur–EU agreement on May 1, 2026, trade dynamics have shifted significantly. In Argentina, exports to the EU rose by 19% during the first seven months of 2026, totaling US$5.191 billion, driven by zero tariffs on industrial goods and the liberalization of 82% of agricultural products. The agreement introduces long-term structural changes for the dairy sector, with gradual tariff reductions for cheeses and milk powder through 2036. Recent developments highlight the expansion of trade opportunities for specialized sectors. In Uruguay, the pharmaceutical industry is seeing new prospects as the agreement expands Mercosur's global GDP coverage from approximately 8% to 20%. Experts suggest Uruguay could serve as a regional logistics hub, noting that roughly 75% of pharmaceutical transits passing through the country are redistributed to the broader region. On the European side, Alessandro Garbellini, head of the economic-commercial office of the Italian Embassy in Brasilia, stated the deal will progressively reduce and eventually eliminate tariffs on more than 90% of EU products. Key sectors expected to benefit include industrial machinery, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy. The agreement will also provide legal protection for 57 Italian geographical indications.
