Authorities in Suriname are investigating the theft of eleven cylinders of mercury from the Geyersvlijt police station. The stolen material, which weighed weighing approximately 35.8 kilograms per cylinder, had been previously seized by authorities and was being stored on the station premises. As part of The investigation has led to the investigation, seven individuals have been apprehended, including arrest of several police officers. Following consultations with the Public Prosecution Service, officers R. C. and A. K. from the Fraud Department Department, and C. B. from the Paramaribo Regional Assistance Team (RBTP). (RBTP), were detained. While seven individuals were initially apprehended, some suspects were later released. The Capital Crimes Department has since arrested two additional suspects, bringing the total number of detainees to nine. These include Inspector J. B. from the Fraud Department, who was responsible for managing the warehouse and container where the mercury was stored, and M. S., who is suspected of involvement in the illegal trade of mercury and firearms. Among those in custody are four police officers. The incident has prompted significant concerns regarding internal security procedures, the integrity of the police force force, and internal security procedures, as well as the potential for involvement in wider illegal networks. Furthermore, the theft poses substantial environmental and public health risks posed by due to the hazardous nature of the substance.
