Mesolithic burial discovery in Sweden
Overview
Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a pregnant woman and a fetus in the Suder Vagnhus cave on the island of Lilla Karlsö, off the coast of Gotland, Sweden. The discovery, made by researcher Alexander Roesen Sjöstrand in collaboration with Uppsala University, dates back to the Mesolithic period.
Initial assessments suggest the woman was an adolescent between 14 and 19 years old, and the fetus was approximately 32 to 34 weeks developed. The remains were found five meters below the cave floor. While initial estimates placed the age at approximately 9,000 years, researchers noted that exact dating is pending radiocarbon and ancient DNA analysis.
Subsequent reports indicate the remains were found in a side chamber that had been sealed with limestone blocks. Researchers also identified fragments of other individuals, including a small child, suggesting the cave served as a burial site for multiple people. If the dating is confirmed, the find would represent one of the oldest known burials of a pregnant woman from the Stone Age in Sweden.
