Urban development and infrastructure initiatives in Messina have focused on both redevelopment funding and accessibility improvements. City councilor Libero Gioveni proposed alternative financing for the Risanamento urban redevelopment project, suggesting the use of the Capacity project and project financing through Arisme to meet legal deadlines for clearing degraded areas. Concurrently, the municipality has advanced accessibility goals by applying for the European Commission’s ‘Access City Award’. This initiative includes the ‘Messina accessible and inclusive city’ program, the introduction of electric buses with wheelchair ramps, and the creation of tactile paths. Additionally, a technical working group was established to address long-standing infrastructure delays in Ortoliuzzo, focusing on widening access roads, extending seaside paths, and constructing new parking and pedestrian walkways to alleviate traffic congestion. Recent efforts have expanded to the Boccetta-Annunziata waterfront project. A technical committee, comprising the Municipality, the University, and the Port System Authority, is working to accelerate the recovery of the former Irrera a Mare site. Furthermore, authorities are planning to repurpose decommissioned pavilions for cultural activities, co-working spaces, and the Urbana Innovation Lab through public tender processes.
