Meta‑BlackRock Texas data‑center financing
Entities: BlackRock Inc. · El Paso, Texas · Larry Fink · Mark Zuckerberg · Meta Platforms Inc.
Overview
In late July 2026 BlackRock marketed a $12.3 billion high‑grade bond due in 2048 to finance the 1‑gigawatt AI data‑center campus in El Paso, Texas. The bonds, sold by JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley, were priced about 2.875 percentage points above 10‑year U.S. Treasury yields with yields above 7 %, and investor demand reached roughly 1.6 times the offering size, signalling softer appetite for large AI‑related debt.
On 28 July a joint‑venture agreement between Meta Platforms and BlackRock formalised ownership and financing of the campus. BlackRock will hold an 80 % stake, contributing roughly $4.9 billion in cash and arranging about $12.5 billion of debt, while Meta will provide land and construction‑in‑progress assets valued at about $2.3 billion and retain the remaining 20 % interest. Meta is slated to receive a one‑time cash distribution of about $1 billion and will lease the entire facility under long‑term contracts. Construction is already underway, with the campus expected to be operational in 2028, creating more than 4,000 peak construction jobs and about 300 permanent positions. Executives underscored the project’s importance for expanding AI‑infrastructure capacity and boosting the regional economy.
