Metlen Energy & Metals is pursuing strategic organizational and operational expansions in Greece. The company is considering an initial public offering (IPO) for its infrastructure subsidiary, METKA Group, on the Athens Stock Exchange. This move follows a reorganization designed to consolidate construction, concessions, and facility management into a single platform to enhance capital access and operational flexibility. In parallel, Metlen has partnered with the Karatzis Group to inaugurate a 330 MW / 790 MWh energy storage facility in Neas Karyes, Larissa. Representing a €170 million investment supported by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, the project is owned 51% by Karatzis Group and 49% by Metlen. During the inauguration, attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Metlen Chairman Evangelos Mytilineos noted that while such projects are vital for industrial competitiveness and managing energy costs, current legislative caps of 500 MW per investor may hinder Greece’s ability to meet its national energy storage target of 4 GW by 2028. The facility, which is among the largest in Europe, marks a strategic milestone for Greece’s energy infrastructure. Metlen has assumed responsibility for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the plant. Prime Minister Mitsotakis described the facility as a “vital step toward Greece’s future,” emphasizing its role in strengthening national energy security and the country’s production base.
