Wheat and corn producers in the Mexicali Valley initiated an indefinite protest by occupying federal offices belonging to SADER, CONAGUA, and the Procuraduría Agraria. Led by Horacio Gómez Carranza, the demonstrators demanded the settlement of approximately 125 million pesos in debts, some dating back to the 2022 agricultural cycle, and expressed concerns regarding support prices for upcoming cycles. Protesters had threatened to block the Mexicali Commercial Border Crossing if their demands were not met. Following dialogue, the Government of Baja California signed an agreement to implement the ‘Emerging Program for Clear Wheat Income’. This initiative provides 1,500 pesos per hectare to eligible clear wheat producers in the Mexicali Valley. Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda stated the program aims to mitigate decreased crop yields, while Mónica Vargas Núñez of SADER noted that the payment integration process would begin following the agreement. The State Council of Wheat Producers acknowledged the government’s support to maintain agricultural continuity. In subsequent meetings involving various agricultural sectors—including date, citrus, corn, cotton, and livestock—producers expressed support for the state government and the work of SADER BC. Officials noted that the operational capacity of SADER BC had been hindered by previous blockades at its facilities. While acknowledging government efforts, producers maintained that current support remains insufficient due to high input costs, international prices, and adverse climatic conditions.
