Mexican agricultural drought and crop failure

Agricultural producers in Mexico are facing severe economic threats due to historic drought conditions, leading to widespread demands for government intervention.

In Quintana Roo, farmers in the Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipality, including communities such as Tepich and Xyatil, have requested federal assistance to activate agricultural insurance. Petitioners reported that up to 90 percent of milpa crops, including corn, beans, and squash, have been lost due to a lack of rainfall. They noted that existing resources for climate-related losses appear insufficient.

The crisis has expanded to other regions, including Guerrero, where peasant organizations are requesting the state be declared a disaster zone. Reports indicate approximately 500,000 hectares of maize may go unharvested, with some areas facing total crop loss. In the Suchiate municipality, producers have threatened to blockade the Suchiate II border crossing to Guatemala unless authorities provide effective solutions. Farmers across these regions have criticized current insurance coverage, noting that payouts are significantly lower than the actual costs of production.
