The Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADR) and the Fideicomiso Instituido en Relación con la Agricultura (FIRA) have introduced the ‘Cosechando Soberanía’ program to bolster food sovereignty through enhanced financing for agricultural, livestock, and aquaculture producers. In Puebla, the initiative focuses on providing preferential credit conditions, interest rate support of up to nine percentage points, and agricultural insurance subsidies to encourage investment in staple crops. Following this, the Sinaloa state government and SADR expanded the program’s application to the 2026-2027 autumn-winter agricultural cycle. In Sinaloa, FIRA will distribute credits of up to 1.3 million pesos per producer at a preferential interest rate of 8.5 percent. Furthermore, a 500 million peso investment has been designated for wheat producers, offering a subsidy of 2,000 pesos per ton to help achieve a target price of 7,050 pesos per ton. Registration for this wheat support is scheduled to run from August 20 to September 20. In Los Mochis, Ahome, FIRA has launched two additional programs, Sustenta+ and Comercializa+, to support the 2026/2027 autumn-winter cycle. FIRA Director General Jesús Alan Elizondo Flores stated these programs address producer needs regarding profitability, marketing, soil conservation, and sustainable farming. Ramón Gallegos Araiza of the Sinaloa Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock noted the programs aim to promote efficient production, responsible water use, and improved commercialization to maintain regional competitiveness.
