Mexico continues to present a diverse tourism landscape, ranging from tranquil, off-the-beaten-path destinations to high-end luxury resorts. Serene locations such as Bacalar in Quintana Roo, the fishing village of El Cuyo in Yucatán, and the colonial setting of Loreto in Baja California Sur remain key highlights for travelers seeking authenticity.

In the luxury sector, major properties including Maroma, a Belmond Hotel, One&Only Mandarina, Rosewood Mandarina, and Four Seasons locations in Tamarindo and Los Cabos have introduced various incentives for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Wellness tourism is also emerging as a significant growth driver, exemplified by the Rosewood Mayakoba’s dedicated wellness island.

However, the Riviera Maya is currently facing a significant downturn. In Tulum, coastal hotel occupancy has fallen below 20%, while all-inclusive resorts have seen rates under 30%. This decline has forced some establishments, such as Sanará Tulum and Serena Glamping Tulum, to temporarily suspend operations. In Playa del Carmen, small hotels reported an 18% occupancy rate for early September, a sharp drop from the 48% average seen during the summer.

Industry leaders attribute this slump to increased federal taxes on non-resident rights, security concerns, and environmental issues like sargassum. In response, the Quintana Roo Secretariat of Tourism (Sedetur) has announced a joint strategy with the real estate sector to attract new investment, aiming to add 10,000 new rooms by 2028 and promote community-based tourism to diversify the regional economy.
