Cultural celebrations and theatrical productions in Mexico are increasingly focusing on traditional heritage and Day of the Dead customs. In Cozumel, the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel announced a Catrina characterization contest for October 25 as part of the ‘Tradición, Luz y Reencuentro’ festival. The competition invites participants to create costumes inspired by Mexican historical figures and traditional symbolism. Simultaneously, theatrical works are being used to explore indigenous identity and folklore. In Xalapa, the production ‘El Coyul’ depicts the life of an indigenous community in Oaxaca, while the multidisciplinary spectacle ‘Las andanzas de La Catrina’ is celebrating its 25th anniversary by utilizing magical realism and folk dance to explore Day of the Dead traditions. Recent efforts to highlight these traditions have expanded into culinary and artistic spheres. Experts have provided guidance on the proper appreciation of ‘pan de muerto’, advising against overwhelming the dough with excessive toppings to ensure the natural texture and aroma are preserved. Additionally, in Villahermosa, a collaboration between Novedades de Tabasco and Studio 57 utilized the ‘Catrín’ figure—the elegant male counterpart to the Catrina popularized by Diego Rivera—to promote and preserve these cultural roots through artistic characterization.
