Mexican fisherman rescue from cenote

Overview

Erasto Crisanto Valdez, a 31-year-old fisherman, was rescued alive after spending 15 days trapped in a cenote located near the Veracruz-Oaxaca border in Mexico. Valdez disappeared on 23 July while fishing in the La Nigua cenote near San Francisco La Paz. He became disoriented while pursuing a fish in a complex network of flooded caverns and survived by locating a natural air pocket within a rock cavity more than 100 metres from his original location.

The rescue operation involved the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina), local residents, Civil Protection units, and an international team of divers and explorers from Mexico, the United States, Germany, and the Dominican Republic. Rescuers had initially believed the mission was a recovery operation for a deceased person, particularly after finding Valdez’s fishing harpoon at a depth of approximately 65 metres. However, they eventually located him in a dry section of the cave where he could breathe, despite facing extreme cold, humidity, and total darkness without food.

Valdez was recovered on 7 August and transported to La Laguna Hospital in Uxpanapa, suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition. He has since returned home to his family. Following the rescue, authorities in San Francisco La Paz have considered a fine of approximately 10,000 pesos against Valdez, as reports suggest he was fishing in a prohibited zone at the time of the incident. Valdez maintained that his fishing activities were for self-consumption rather than commercial use.
