Mexican food price increases due to drought
Overview
A severe drought in Mexico has led to significant agricultural shortages and rising food prices. In Guerrero, industry leaders reported that approximately 190,000 hectares of land were lost, with potential corn yield reductions estimated between 550,000 and 600,000 tons. To combat rising costs and stabilize the supply chain, producers requested government intervention and the establishment of direct commercialization channels with other states to bypass intermediaries.
As the shortage progressed, price hikes became evident in local markets. In Iguala, Guerrero, the cost of corn tortillas and corn dough increased significantly. High freight costs, reaching roughly 1,400 pesos per ton, further contributed to these rises. Similar inflationary trends were observed in Morelos, where tomato prices more than doubled in a single week, alongside price increases for various vegetables and fruits.
