In late September 2026, Mexican lawmakers called for an investigation into former Acatlán mayor Guadalupe Lucero Bárcenas. The request followed Bárcenas following allegations from Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara regarding potential links to organized crime. Bárcenas dismissed the claims as a “perversion of reality,” stating she was a victim of organized crime rather than a collaborator. By early October, security operations in Chiapas led to the arrest of the current Suchiapa mayor, Jorge Lorenzo Lara Cordero, and former mayor Alexis Nucamendi Gómez. This crackdown, known as Operación Enjambre, involved the Mexican Army, National Guard, and the Attorney General's Office (FGR). (FGR), and the Secretariat of Security and Protection of the Citizen (SSPC), working alongside Chiapas state security forces. On October 3, 2026, the operation resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals, including various members and commanders of the Suchiapa Municipal Police and judicial personnel. The detainees are being investigated for suspected corruption, abuse of authority, and criminal association. These arrests follow the prior detention of Municipal Police Director Jesús Antonio “N,” who is under investigation for allegedly facilitating the escape of Humberto N, alias ‘La Gretel,’ a member of the Chiapas and Guatemala Cartel, from the municipal jail. jail following a drug enforcement operation on September 25.
