The Mexican National Guard has officially adopted a 13-month-old Chihuahua named ‘Comando Chihuahua’ to serve within its canine unit. Originally donated by an elderly couple in the state of Chihuahua, the dog has become a viral sensation on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, often appearing in tactical gear including a custom helmet, protective sunglasses, and a GoPro camera. While the force’s canine unit typically consists of approximately 350 larger dogs such as German Shepherds and Labradors, Comando is being specifically trained for search and rescue operations. Weighing approximately 7 kilograms and standing 21 centimeters tall, the dog is the smallest member of the unit. Lieutenant Deborah Hernández stated that the dog’s role is intended to challenge stereotypes regarding size and to serve in a ‘social proximity role’ to foster empathy and warmer relationships between the military and the public. Beyond its tactical training, Comando participates in civic ceremonies, school events, and community outreach programs to help soften the image of the National Guard. The dog’s visibility increased significantly following its participation in the 2026 Civic-Military Parade in Mexico City. In addition to search and rescue, Comando is undergoing specialized training for drug detection. The dog’s unique presence and training exercises have garnered international media attention from outlets including Reuters, Forbes, and the New York Post.
