Mexican state and federal authorities have conducted a series of operations in Sinaloa targeting the ‘Los Chapitos’ faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. In mid-September, security forces arrested 11 members of the faction in Escuinapa. These individuals are allegedly linked to the kidnapping of 10 miners from the Canadian company Vizsla Silver in January. The operation resulted in the seizure of weapons, ammunition, and tactical gear. This brought the total number of detainees connected to the Vizsla Silver case to 18. By late September, federal forces arrested Jesús Antonio “N”, known as “El Peli”, in Mazatlán. Identified as a key operator for Los Chapitos working under Genaro Aarón “N”, he is accused of managing logistics, supply chains, and financial resources from drug sales, as well as being linked to investigations regarding the illegal deprivation of liberty. The arrest of “El Peli” was part of a coordinated operation involving SEDENA, SEMAR, SSPC, FGR, and the CNI, which also resulted in the detention of three other individuals. According to Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Protection of the Citizen, “El Peli” coordinated the supply, logistics, and management of funds derived from drug sales and is considered a “significant generator of violence in the region.” This action occurred during a broader reinforcement of security in Sinaloa, involving the deployment of approximately 3,400 additional military and security personnel to address rising violence and internal cartel conflicts.
