Mexico City expands Utopia community center program

In July 2026, Mexico City’s head of government, Clara Brugada, inaugurated two large-scale public complexes under the city’s “Utopia” program. The first, Utopía Acatitla, opened on 13 July in Iztapalapa. Built with an investment of 119 million pesos, the 16,000-square-metre facility provides a semi-olympic pool, sports courts, cultural workshops, and free health services, including dentistry and addiction prevention. To accommodate workers in the eastern periphery, operating hours have been extended to 23:00. On 26 July, a second, larger center was launched in the indigenous community of San Miguel Topilejo, Tlalpan. Named Utopia Centli (Utopia del Maíz), the 50,000-m² hub cost 253 million pesos and serves nearly 30,000 residents. The site includes a germplasm bank to protect nine native maize varieties, supporting the city’s goal to remain a territory free of transgenic maize while conserving vital soil and water resources. Expanding the initiative into urban renewal, Brugada announced in August 2026 that the abandoned Plaza Merced 2000 will be transformed into a new Utopia center. This project aims to serve the workers and residents of the La Merced commercial area. The plan includes remodeling a local market to serve as a city model and implementing a new security program for the district’s markets, following an initial 40 million peso investment to renovate the electrical system in the Nave Menor. On 25 August, Brugada inaugurated Utopía México Tenochtitlan Estación Creativa in the Miguel Hidalgo borough. Built on the former Metro Colegio Militar site, the 52-million-peso, six-level facility covers nearly 4,000 square metres and is intended to serve over 132,000 people. While providing rehabilitation and day services for seniors, the center focuses on youth development through amenities such as a recording studio, robotics laboratories, a fashion and recycling workshop, and a gaming area with Formula 1 simulators.
