Mexico digital and space infrastructure development

Overview

Mexico is advancing its digital and space infrastructure through a series of major technological initiatives. The government has announced plans to launch a new geostationary telecommunications satellite by the first quarter of 2030 to replace the Bicentenario satellite, which is nearing the end of its operational life.

This satellite project aims to increase transmission capacity from approximately 6 Gbps to over 250 Gbps. The upgrade is intended to support national security, the armed forces, and connectivity for approximately 820,000 people in remote areas where fiber optic installation is difficult. The project is part of the Mexican Space Program and National Connectivity Plan 2026-2030.

In conjunction with these space efforts, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has opened a tender for 60 MHz of radio spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band. This spectrum is specifically designated for private industrial networks to support Industry 4.0 applications, such as robotics and autonomous vehicles, across 72 industrial regions.
