In the first half of 2026, CONDUSEF logged 4,121 consumer complaints in Yucatán, an 11.2% year-on-year rise. Credit card disputes emerged as the primary driver, increasing by 47.3% to 1,195 cases; combined with debit cards and personal loans, these account for 72.3% of regional grievances. Most complaints, concentrated heavily in Mérida (82.1% of files), involved unrecognized charges and unauthorized digital transactions. CONDUSEF's conciliation processes recovered 28.9 million pesos for affected users in the state. Nationally, fraud complaints surged to 63,571 filings between January and May, with a 31% jump in bank-fraud cases in Q1, while banks repaid only about 24% of claimed losses. AI-driven threats, including deep-fake voices and QR-code scams, have prompted widespread alerts. Amidst these security challenges, the digital banking landscape continues to evolve. On August 6, Nu Bank officially transitioned from a Sociedad Financiera Popular (Sofipo) to a full-service bank following CNBV authorization. The digital-only institution, backed by a 19 billion peso investment, now holds approximately 120 billion pesos in assets. This transition significantly increased deposit protection for users, moving from 25,000 UDIS under the Sofipo regime to up to 400,000 UDIS per person via IPAB. Credit card usage in Mexico has seen significant growth, driven by fintech expansion. According to Banxico, the number of credit cards rose 54% between Q3 2023 and Q1 2026, increasing from 31.7 million to 48.9 million. While fintechs reach unbanked sectors, experts note delinquency rates can reach 15% to 17%. E-commerce remains a central economic pillar, with sales reaching roughly 941 billion pesos. Recent data highlights that fintech growth and digital infrastructure have fueled this credit expansion, with Nubank alone issuing approximately 6 million cards. Increased spending has been particularly notable in travel, restaurants, and fast food, influenced by consumer activity surrounding the 2026 World Cup.
