Mexico farm labor rights and migration

On 4 August 2026, a group of 117 indigenous day‑laborers from Guerrero travelled north to work on farms in Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí and Sonora. The contingent, which included many children, reported inadequate food, sleeping arrangements and basic services upon arrival at the Casa del Jornalero in Tlapa, accusing several federal agencies of neglect.

The following day, 5 August 2026, Mexico’s Supreme Court of Justice issued a ruling that obliges employers to provide farm workers with dignified housing, food, water, medical care, training and other essential conditions. The decision upheld key provisions of the Federal Labor Law and highlighted the plight of roughly 3.4 million agricultural workers, most of whom are informal. The Court’s ruling referenced the same indigenous workers’ situation, underscoring systemic deficiencies in government support and the need for enforceable labor standards.

Together, the events illustrate a growing legal and humanitarian focus on improving living and working conditions for Mexico’s farm labor force, particularly vulnerable indigenous migrants.
