In late June 2026, an explosion ripped through the Los Trapiches community of Misantla, Veracruz, during its patron saint festivities when a “torito” pyrotechnic device struck a gas cylinder, injuring 23 people, three seriously. Two weeks later, on 15 July, a similar device detonated at the patronal festival in Acaxiloco, Cuetzalan, Puebla, harming more than twenty attendees, most lightly. On 18 July, a lightning strike ignited a stock of pyrotechnics stored in the sacristy of a Catholic church in San Antonio de Pantaleón, Acámbaro, Guanajuato, injuring five people, including a teenager with serious injuries. Firefighters, paramedics and ~~civil‑protection~~ civil-protection teams secured the site and authorities began inspections for additional risks. The danger escalated on ~~25‑26~~ 25-26 July when a stray rocket ignited fireworks stored for a patronal celebration in Cocula, Guerrero. Local officials blamed organizers for keeping the launch site too close to the stored pyrotechnics, and the bishop called for a week of prayer for the victims.
