Mexico healthcare coverage and access challenges
Overview
In Mexico, the percentage of the population lacking health insurance or knowledge of where to access medical care has risen to approximately 43 percent. Researcher Gabriela Luna Ruiz of the Universidad Iberoamericana (IBERO) noted this is a significant increase from the 21 percent recorded during the Seguro Popular program.
Following the removal of that program, the lack of coverage has intensified. Currently, approximately half of all healthcare spending in Mexico is paid directly out of pocket by families, covering costs for consultations, medications, and medical studies. This can lead to catastrophic expenses for those without formal employment benefits. Additionally, the Mexican government allocates less than 3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the health sector.
