In August 2026, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the National Electoral Institute (INE) for its proposed 2027 federal election budget, describing the 36.119 billion peso request as “exaggerated.” Sheinbaum argued the budget should be based on 2024 costs adjusted for inflation, whereas the INE defended the increase by citing a growing electoral roll of over 102 million voters and an increase in polling stations. By September 2026, the INE addressed reports of a 68 million peso discrepancy within its Real Estate Infrastructure Program for 2025–2027. The institute clarified that the issue was an “arithmetic discrepancy” in a financial report annex caused by comparing records from two different departments. The INE stated that core financial figures remained correct and that the annex was updated following observations from the Internal Control Body. In early September 2026, the INE implemented new administrative measures to prepare for upcoming electoral processes. To combat potential fraud, the General Council approved a procedure for handling “boletas planchadas” (unfolded ballots), which lack the physical creases typically required for urn insertion; these will be set aside by district councils for formal review. This protocol has faced criticism from opposition members who argue it could facilitate fraud. Additionally, the INE and the Mexico City Electoral Institute (IECM) designated technical units to coordinate the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP) for the 2027 elections. On the disciplinary front, the INE imposed fines totaling approximately 2.86 million pesos on the Morena, Movimiento Ciudadano, and PVEM parties for irregularities such as improper affiliations. The institute also dismissed a complaint from Movimiento Ciudadano regarding the potential personalized promotion of the President in government social media posts, ruling the content was “purely institutional.”
