In early July, officials reported a sharp increase in criminal extortion targeting migrants and hotel guests throughout Mexico. Migrants traveling the Tenosique‑Villahermosa route were repeatedly stopped at checkpoints, detained and forced to pay bribes of up to 20,000 pesos. The State Human Rights Commission recorded roughly 1,000 cases in Tabasco—far above the typical 20‑30 yearly cases—highlighting systemic corruption in agencies such as the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) and the National Institute of Migration (INM).
