In late July 2026, officials in the State of Mexico reported that cardiovascular disease remained the leading cause of death nationwide. The state recorded more than 40 deaths per day, with 12,249 cardiovascular fatalities in 2024. Jennifer González López, president of the state health commission, noted that cardiovascular disease accounts for approximately 30% of national deaths—roughly 200,000 annually—and warned that over 80% of these premature deaths are preventable through early detection and lifestyle changes targeting obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking. National data for 2025 released by INEGI showed an overall decline in mortality to 762,494 deaths, the lowest level since 2021, with a death rate of 584 per 100,000. Chronic-degenerative diseases continue to drive mortality; heart disease, diabetes, and malignant tumors together account for nearly half of all deaths. Specifically, heart disease caused 177,673 deaths, diabetes 106,874, and malignant tumors 92,006 in 2025. Chronic-degenerative diseases overall accounted for approximately 89.8% of all deaths. Other significant causes include liver diseases, accidents, and respiratory issues. External causes of death, including accidents, homicides, and suicides, accounted for approximately 10.2% of total fatalities. While homicides decreased by 16.6% in 2025, totaling 27,989 cases, this reduction was noted to be lower than previous federal government estimates. Suicide remained a concern with 8,846 deaths, 80% of whom were men. Chihuahua reported the highest standardized suicide rate at 13.9 per 100,000, followed by Quintana Roo and Aguascalientes. Regional trends varied, with Tabasco and Puebla recording the highest diabetes mortality rates.
