Overview

In July 2026 Mexico's new Pacific‑coast LNG export facility, the Energia Costa Azul Phase 1 terminal in Baja California, began commercial shipments. Because the terminal receives gas from the United States, each shipment requires authorization from the U.S. Department of Energy, with limits of up to 0.5 Bcf/d for free‑trade‑agreement destinations and 0.44 Bcf/d otherwise. The Pacific location shortens routes to Asia compared with Gulf‑coast projects, and plans for a second phase could add another 1.6 Bcf/d, further expanding Mexico’s role in the global LNG trade.
