Analyses suggest the hike could result in an annual loss of over 1.2 million international tourists, including approximately 610,000 travelers from the United States. Major destinations such as Cancun, Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, Puerto Escondido, and Puerto Vallarta are identified as particularly vulnerable. Critics warn the move may disadvantage Mexico against Caribbean competitors like the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Costa Rica.

In Quintana Roo, business leaders are awaiting a ruling from the Chamber of Deputies. The Hotel Council of the Mexican Caribbean (CHCM) has warned that the proposed hike, when combined with other adjustments, would result in a cumulative increase of nearly 55 percent between 2025 and 2027. While Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, has met with federal authorities to express private sector concerns, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa stated the state administration is working to secure positive outcomes for the region. Recent reports indicate that the tourism sector in Quintana Roo continues to monitor the proposal closely as it weighs the potential impact on regional competitiveness.
