The Mexican government has initiated a broad public health strategy focused on vaccination campaigns and infrastructure expansion. For the 2026-2027 winter season, the administration announced the use of Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to prevent severe illness, targeting individuals from six months of age and older. Health guidelines also support the simultaneous administration of Covid-19 and influenza vaccines. This effort is part of a wider ‘Healthy Republic’ initiative aimed at preventive medicine. Health Secretary David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz reported that 149 million vaccine doses have been administered free of charge over the past two years. Beyond Covid-19, the government is managing influenza, HPV, and respiratory syncytial virus vaccination programs, alongside the ‘Salud Casa por Casa’ program which provides home consultations for seniors and people with disabilities. As the 2026-2027 winter season approaches, specific regional rollouts have commenced. In Oaxaca, a campaign scheduled to begin on October 12 will provide over 957,000 doses of influenza and COVID-19 vaccines, running through April 2027 with priority given to children under five, seniors, and those with chronic conditions. Similarly, in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, health boards are coordinating preventive actions against seasonal viruses, including influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcus, while also reinforcing measles vaccination efforts and planning for 24 universal health clinics. To support these health services, Mexico is undergoing a significant expansion of hospital capacity. With an investment of approximately 24 billion pesos, 33 new hospitals have been inaugurated, adding 1,535 beds. The administration plans to continue this expansion through ongoing construction and planning projects, aiming to add nearly 9,000 beds across the IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS-Bienestar institutions by the end of the current term.
