The Mexican government is implementing the Servicio Universal de Salud (SUS) initiative, which aims to establish a network of 12,750 primary care clinics across 24 states by January 2027. The project is designed to provide a first point of medical contact for all citizens, regardless of their specific institutional registration, such as IMSS, ISSSTE, or Pemex. To support this expansion, a national recruitment drive for medical, nursing, and technical personnel is underway, having already attracted over 73,000 applicants. The initiative seeks to reduce healthcare fragmentation through standardized diagnostic criteria, shared electronic medical records, and a common portfolio of laboratory tests and supplies. Alejandro Svarch, director general of IMSS-Bienestar, stated that the clinics will operate under the rule of “cero rechazo” (zero rejection), ensuring every patient is evaluated and guided. President Claudia Sheinbaum noted that each clinic will offer approximately 60 basic medications to treat conditions not requiring specialized care, with the goal of adding roughly 50 million consultations to the national annual capacity. As the rollout approaches, the federal government is allocating 4 billion pesos for the adaptation and maintenance of facilities, which include public areas and abandoned municipal health houses. Parallel efforts include the ‘Salud Casa por Casa’ program, which has completed over 27 million home medical consultations—primarily for seniors and people with disabilities—and referred more than 45,000 medical emergencies to hospitals. This program has reached 10.2 million households and assists in detecting chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Additionally, the LIBRE Centers for women have provided over 1.4 million services nationwide. consultations. Recent developments indicate that include the ISSSTE has begun integrating 100 clinics into the SUS network, with plans to contribute a total of 500 clinics to clinics. In Sinaloa, authorities have launched the initiative. implementation of 378 new SUS clinics. To manage these, 150 assemblies will be held to form Health Committees for Wellbeing, composed of local residents who will determine how allocated funds—between 150,000 and 250,000 pesos per clinic—are used for infrastructure and maintenance.
