Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) has uncovered an extensive money laundering and embezzlement network operating between 2008 and 2018. The scheme involved former Secretary of Public Security Genaro García Luna and the Weinberg business group, utilizing over 44 companies to divert public funds through shell companies and inflated government contracts. According to UIF head Omar Reyes Colmenares, the network allegedly disguised bribes as commercial payments and moved funds to the United States via Caribbean nations like Barbados. The total amount of diverted resources is estimated at approximately 528 million pesos and 727.9 million dollars. On August 25, 2026, the Federal Treasury officially received 5.8 million US dollars recovered from the network. This follows a May 2026 Florida court ruling that ordered the Weinberg family and associated companies to pay 578.5 million dollars in damages to the Mexican state. The recovered funds, obtained through a bond and the liquidation of 12 properties in Florida, total approximately 100 million pesos. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced these resources will be used to improve educational infrastructure in the Mountain region of Guerrero, specifically targeting basic, upper secondary, and higher ~~education.~~ education to support communities with high levels of social neglect. While this recovery is complete, authorities noted that the liquidation of additional assets remains pending. The UIF investigation further revealed that the network obtained at least 30 government contracts through inflated pricing and shell companies involving over 403 million dollars. Regarding the scope of the investigation, President Sheinbaum noted that while former President Felipe Calderón does not appear in the money laundering files, this “does not necessarily rule out his knowledge of the activities.”
