The Michoacán state government continued its lake‑restoration programme in late through July 2026, reporting that work and August 2026. Work on 79 springs and more than 2 km of canals in the Lake Pátzcuaro basin had removed 132,571 m³ of sediment, cleared 48,000 m² of weed and extracted 200 m³ of stone. The rehabilitation of over 3.5 km of the Erongarícuaro canal restored full boat traffic, directly benefiting 61 sites in 40 communities across six municipalities. A parallel project on the Chapultepec Canal dredged four kilometres, rebuilt the channel and re‑established a flow of 500 L s⁻¹ into the lake, while work on the Las Garzas‑Ihuatzio canal neared completion. The effort, coordinated by SCOP, OOAPAS Temporary Employment Program expanded its conservation actions, restoring 42 new spring sources, treating 79 in total, implementing soil‑conservation measures on 750 ha, constructing 280 earthen and other agencies, employed excavators, draglines 96 stone dams, installing 190 filtration dams, and aquadozers. re‑foresting 420 ha with an estimated 2.5 million seedlings. Flood‑mitigation works began on the Itzícuaro drain in Morelia (5.5 km, 23 % complete) and a rescue operation for the Guani River in Pátzcuaro was launched. On 2 August 2026 Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla announced a historic fish‑seeding operation, releasing 321,000 native fry – white fish, acúmara and, for the first time, 1,500 achoques produced by state farms – into Lake Pátzcuaro. The seeding builds on previous releases dating back to 2022 and is part of the a broader strategy that also includes lake sanitation, reforestation, biodiversity conservation and support for local fishing communities.
