The government of Michoacán has implemented a public policy through the Secretariat of Welfare (Sedebi) to support families of children with cancer. The ‘Familias Cuidadoras de Niñas y Niños con Cáncer’ program provides monthly economic assistance of 4,000 pesos to cover costs such as medication, food, and transportation. Since 2022, the program has supported 836 families with an investment exceeding 86 million pesos. This initiative has contributed to a significant reduction in childhood cancer treatment abandonment rates, which fell from 30 percent to 2 percent. Additionally, the state has allocated 165 million pesos for high-specialty medical technology, including PET Scans and Linear Accelerators. According to the Michoacán Ministry of Health, these efforts have improved survival rates, with leukemia recovery increasing from 60 to 75 percent and lymphoma recovery rising ~~from 60~~ to 80 percent. Recent reports indicate that the caregivers receiving this support are 90 percent women.
