In early August 2026, Carlos Torres Piña, a candidate for the state coordination of the Defense of the Transformation and Sovereignty in Michoacán, gathered more than 2,000 local leaders in Ario and later in Morelia. The rallies highlighted his grassroots network, endorsements from productive, commercial, professional and social sectors, and his promotion of projects linked to President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum, such as the National Water Plan and agricultural support programs. The events were presented as a demonstration of his territorial strength ahead of the 2027 elections and his standing within Morena. A few days later, the 76th Legislature of Michoacán approved a further 45‑day extension of the leave granted to Torres Piña in his role as State Attorney General. Legislators noted his continued collaboration with Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and PVEM leader Ernesto Núñez Aguilar, framing the extension as part of a unified political front before the upcoming electoral cycle. Analysts pointed to his extensive local relationships as assets for a possible candidacy, while Torres Piña emphasized that any future appointment must follow clear, equitable rules. By mid-August, Torres Piña emerged as a leading figure for the Morena-PT-PVEM coalition in the 2027 gubernatorial race. Polling by Massive Caller indicated he held the highest voter preference at 32.6%, a figure that rose to 43.2% when respondents were asked if the coalition should select a male candidate. He leads other potential candidates, such as Raúl Morón Orozco, in these preference surveys. Torres Piña’s political history includes roles as Secretary of Government and State Attorney General, as well as two terms as a federal deputy.
