Microsoft has announced updated support timelines for several legacy enterprise technologies. Mainstream support for Windows Server 2022 is scheduled to conclude on October 13, 2026, after which it will enter an extended support phase providing monthly security updates until October 14, 2031. Regarding web compatibility, Microsoft has confirmed via the Microsoft 365 Message Center that Internet Explorer (IE) mode within Microsoft Edge will remain supported until at least the end of 2029. This mode utilizes the Trident rendering engine to allow businesses and governments to run legacy applications, internal portals, and management systems that are incompatible with modern Chromium-based browsers. Microsoft has clarified that eliminating IE compatibility mode by the end of 2029 will remove the final functional link to the legacy browser within Microsoft Edge. Because updating digital infrastructure often requires significant investment and long development cycles, Microsoft is urging IT administrators to begin planning migrations for legacy applications and websites to avoid future disruptions, noting that modernization projects can take years to complete. disruptions. To assist with this transition, the Microsoft App Assure program is available to eligible customers facing compatibility issues. Microsoft has stated it will provide at least one year of formal notice before the mode is officially retired. The push for modernization follows security concerns, including instances in 2024 where hackers exploited IE mode through malicious pop-up advertisements.
