Overview

On August 31, 2026, a massive global outage affected Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Online, disrupting email services for millions of users. The incident, tracked as EX1464935, was attributed to a technical error within a central authentication and connectivity component of the Exchange Online cloud infrastructure. This disruption also impacted other Microsoft 365 services, including Teams, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Defender XDR.

Following the initial widespread disruption, a subsequent incident identified as EX1467029 was confirmed on September 4. This later issue caused intermittent ‘Server Busy’ errors and delays for emails sent to and from external domains. Microsoft indicated that existing anti-spam protection mechanisms might be exacerbating these delays while investigations into the underlying cause continue.
