Microsoft has announced extended support timelines for several legacy technologies. The company extended the deadline for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) through October 12, 2027, providing monthly security patches for version 22H2 without adding new features. Additionally, Microsoft informed administrators that Internet Explorer (IE) mode within Microsoft Edge will be supported until at least the end of 2029. This mode is intended to assist organizations relying on legacy web applications built on the MSHTML engine. Microsoft has committed to providing at least one year of notice before the eventual discontinuation of IE mode support. In a formal warning to enterprise administrators, Microsoft has reiterated that support for IE mode is scheduled to end by the end of 2029. While the standalone Internet Explorer browser was retired in June 2022, the IE mode was maintained to allow businesses to run critical legacy web applications using the older Trident engine within the modern Edge environment. The company is providing this notice to allow organizations to modernize digital infrastructures, audit legacy software dependencies, and transition away from outdated technologies that may pose security risks to corporate and financial networks.
